Creativity Meets Culture: Ecclesbourne Primary Launches FOBBS with a Research Challenge

To celebrate the launch of the Figures of Black British Society (FOBBS) app, Ecclesbourne Primary School hosted a vibrant research competition that brought history, creativity, and representation to life.

As one of the first schools to adopt a full subscription to the FOBBS app, Ecclesbourne played a key role in its development — with the school council even taking part in early testing and providing valuable feedback to help shape the experience for learners across the UK.

The competition brief was simple, yet powerful: use the FOBBS app to explore a Black British figure and present your learning through a fact sheet or poster. What followed was an outpouring of thoughtful research, beautifully designed projects, and an inspiring showcase of student voice and imagination.

With so many exceptional entries, narrowing down the winners was no easy task. In the end, the results were:

🏆 Joint Winners – Mia and Ameera
🌟 Highly Commended – Asman, Cienna, Makanaka and Navitha

Each entry demonstrated a deep engagement with the lives and legacies of Black British figures — showing that when children are given the right tools and encouragement, they rise to the challenge with pride and purpose.

A huge thank you goes out to the students, parents, and teachers who supported and celebrated this competition every step of the way. Special thanks to Miss Waters, Ecclesbourne’s Head Teacher, for championing inclusive education and helping to make this opportunity possible. We are also grateful to Ms Baldry for generously contributing signed copies of Bright Stars of Black British History and Our World, My Roots – Jamaica, and to FOBBS founder Kayleigh Oliver, who donated exciting prizes for the winners.

This event was more than just a competition — it was a celebration of identity, heritage, and the joy of learning. We can’t wait to see what Ecclesbourne does next!
