Honouring Legacy, Inspiring Futures: Windrush Day 2025 at FOBBS

This Windrush Day, we proudly joins the nation in celebrating the immense contributions of the Windrush Generation and their descendants. At FOBBS, we believe in the power of education to honour the past, elevate the present, and empower the future.

The arrival of the HMT Empire Windrush at Tilbury Docks in 1948 marked the beginning of a new chapter in British history. Those who came from the Caribbean to rebuild post-war Britain brought with them not only vital skills and labour but also rich cultural traditions, values of resilience, and community spirit that have profoundly shaped the UK.

For many of us at FOBBS, Windrush stories are personal. My own grandparents made the journey to Britain in the years following Windrush, hopeful for better opportunities for their family. Like so many others, they faced immense challenges but built lives filled with love, hard work, and pride. Their courage and perseverance have laid the foundations on which we stand today.

Windrush Day is more than a moment of remembrance—it is a call to teach inclusive histories, celebrate diverse identities, and empower young people of all backgrounds. Importantly, it is also a reminder that the contributions of the Windrush Generation should be recognised not just in June, but throughout the entire year.

How can we help you celebrate Windrush all year round?

In the lead-up to Windrush Day, FOBBS has supported schools with:

  • An offline Windrush-themed resource pack including a search-and-find activity and a quiz suitable for KS2 and up
  • Guidance on embedding Windrush stories across the curriculum year-round
  • Ideas for workshops and events amplifying intergenerational voices
  • Support for pupils to explore their own heritage and identity through storytelling, art, and digital media

Sign up to FOBBS now to download our Windrush resource to support your students’ learning about Windrush all throughout 2025.

This year, we invite you to engage with Windrush Day by encouraging critical conversations in your classrooms, highlighting the lived experiences and achievements of the Windrush Generation, and reflecting on the legacy they have left for us all.

Let us use this day to honour the journey, celebrate the contributions, and continue the work of building a more inclusive future.
