Over the 31 days of Black History Month 2024, I shared a different resource each day to help educators, families, and individuals deepen their knowledge of Black Britons and the diverse contributions they’ve made to our shared history.
The theme this year was “Reclaiming Narratives – Lessons Learned”, and through this journey, a few key things became clear:
We are making progress. From beautifully illustrated books to interactive apps and card games, a growing number of creators are developing engaging and meaningful educational content.
But there’s still a gap. It was surprisingly difficult to find 31 diverse, high-quality resources — particularly those that weren’t books. Most content is still heavily text-based, which risks excluding learners who thrive with other formats (like interactive, visual, or kinesthetic learning).
Representation is still not accessible enough. Many of the resources I found were niche, hard to discover, or not widely adopted in mainstream schools.
We need more investment and innovation in non-book resources like games, exhibitions, activities, and tech tools that celebrate the full richness of Black British stories.
Despite the challenges, I want to celebrate and thank the brilliant minds creating the resources listed below. Your work matters — and it’s changing the landscape for learners of all ages.
Whether you’re a teacher, parent, carer, or lifelong learner, I hope this list helps you build a richer and more inclusive toolkit for understanding and teaching Black British history — not just in October, but all year round.
