Discovery and Learning Black Britons in STEM

In October we took part in a collaborative STEM Black Britons Workshop that brought together 120 Year 5 and 6 pupils for a day of learning, discovery, and inspiration at Wyvil Primary school.

For the FOBBS activity, we led an interactive quiz that challenged pupils to explore the achievements of four brilliant Black Britons in STEM:
Sir David Adjaye — the renowned architect
Liza Layne — a trailblazer in Software Engineering
Professor Dr Nira Chamberlain OBE FIMA FORS CSci PhD HonDSc DUniv — a distinguished mathematician
Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock — an inspiring Space Scientist.

Working in teams, pupils used fact sheets to discover the answers to the quiz questions about these incredible individuals. The activity wasn’t just about learning facts — it was about understanding, recognizing representation, and developing teamwork skills.

The energy in the room was electric as students dove into their research and collaborated to find answers. The winning group took home prizes generously donated by Waterstones Streatham and Picturehouse Ritzy Cinema, and every single participant proudly received a certificate to mark their achievement for the day.

Our FOBBS quiz activity was put together quickly using exclusive content and resources available within the FOBBS platform. This demonstrates just how easy it can be to integrate inclusive, curriculum-linked learning into lessons — often in just minutes.

The outcome was more than just a workshop. The children had a wonderful day filled with learning, fun, and exciting activities. They discovered new Black British STEM heroes, worked collaboratively with their peers, and left with a broader understanding of what’s possible.

The day proved that representation in education doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right tools and resources, teachers can bring diverse role models and stories into their classrooms seamlessly.
